just a little cha-cha

Kia ora friends,

For years I had a quote displayed in my bedroom – I can’t completely remember it, but it was about the notion that a step forward followed by a backward step is not a disaster. It’s a cha-cha.

I’m working to embody this understanding today, as I wrestle with my precious podcast project. Producer Laura and I have been working for a couple of months now, have done big work on planning the sections, the themes, the intros and outros. I’ve done lots of recording (*although I did not have “get really sick and have a stuffy nose” in my plan! This has slowed me down and rendered some audio unusable). We have been gathering voices, stories, and perspectives.

It’s been starting to come together rather nicely AT LAST … except … I have discomfort and disquiet about the super important music selection. This has GOT to be right. I thought we had done it … Laura had inserted all the selections in place … now … UGH … friends, I’m just not so sure. It is SO HARD to get something that is warm and chill – but not schmaltzy. Something relaxed and welcoming – but not ‘sexy times down by the fire’.

This is too important to be ambivalent about. I’ve been listening to so many music samples I feel a bit doolally!

Anyway … I’ll share a couple of quality links and then get some coffee onboard and get back to musical considerations and more recording.

Here is a link to some new research to encourage further families to keep little kids phone free, and I’m pretty inspired by Emily Cherkin’s work around Tech-Intentional school certification.

This piece by Politico is about resistance to data centre proliferation (let’s GOOOOO Justin Pearson!) and here is a little something for your September Springtime, my southern hemisphere whānau … the Spring Screen Break.

A couple of entries from the “folk to know about” file: first up, from the UK, the 1001 Critical Days Foundation, and OH MY LORD with thanks to my friends at GAINING, I am totally blown away by the work of Stoyan R. Vezenkof and his Nootism journal.

So much to read. But so much to listen to!
Gotta get back to it. Ending with a quote from an epic poem:

“Life was easier
before we had everyone’s opinions in our pockets.”
